What is the Breadvan Hommage?
When a true admirer of an Italian brand reported to Niels van Roij Design with a special request to custom build a Breadvan Hommage, the design studio saw it as an honorable task to translate the iconic racing car into a car from the more recent past.

“We see it as a great privilege that we can honour the Breadvan through this Hommage commission,” says Van Roij. “It is a complex task to translate the essence of the legendary original into a contemporary design. We intend to be inspired by the original, but will ensure we are not limited by it in our creativity”.


Weekly updates
Because this coachbuilding commission includes a full re-body and major interior changes it is a unique opportunity for Niels van Roij Design to allow full insight into the entire development on their social media and website: from ideation process, exterior and interior design, to final coachbuilding of the aluminum Breadvan Hommage. The complete openness that we as car design studio will offer on a weekly basis is exceptional within automotive design.

The base vehicle
The patron decided the base car for his dream project had to be true to the vehicle used to build the original Breadvan. Indeed: its bodywork was based on a 2-seat grand tourer. Moreover, it is boasting a front-engined V12 with manual transmission. As a result the car he bought marked the return to a front-engine, rear-wheel drive layout, this is the choice of car for our patron: a historically very significant car to the brand and conceptually an exceptional match for our conversion.


Redesign the body
Niels van Roij Design will redesign the complete body. As a result of this only the tubular steel space frame will remain. This contains a front-mounted naturally aspirated V12 with rear-wheel drive transaxle layout, connected to a 6-speed gearbox. The design and coachbuilding team will be completely re-desiging the base car. This will start with its proportions: the car seen from about 10 meters of distance. With the biggest changes in the rear, starting from behind the B-pillar. The second step will be the surfacing of the car: the skin or metal work will be re-shaped by talented artisans, based upon the design choices made by the patron. Last but not least will be jewellery: the finest and smallest details. However these are often very significant in their presence. All three levels of the base vehicle will all changed and only the windscreen will remain untouched.


Completely bespoke interior design
Exquisite individual details, made to fit the patron of the vehicle, will be integrated in this design. The surfacing, or skin of the car, will be complimenting the OEM design of the Italian base car exterior. Eventually, the interior of this motorcar will be changed too. The individuality in each of the design statements in the driver sanctuary will include bespoke trims. Likewise, we are designing headrest embroidery and new door panels. Subsequently, a new headliner, colour-coded elements, unique application of leathers and many more items require the artistry of a selection of experts. They will collaborate to fulfil this client wish. His dreams will become reality with bespoke styling and engineering. It is an unprecedented experience of co-designing his dream car. Through computer 3D-visualisations we will take the project from a piece of paper to a uniquely personal motorcar featuring elaborate tailored body modifications.
