Germany's Minister of Defense Rudolf Scharping was injured on Tuesday when a security gate at the Pentagon opened underneath his car.

After being treated immediately at the Pentagon for forehead and leg injuries, Scharping was taken to Arlington Hospital for further medical tests.

It was supposed to be a routine honour cordon welcome for the German Minister of Defense Rudolf Scharping by U.S. Defense Secretary William Cohen.

However after waiting a few moments, Cohen was advised that there had been an incident at the gate, when the officials vehicles arrived at the Pentagon.

Once Cohen caught sight of the car, he rushed to the gate to find out what happened.

Pentagon spokesman Ken Bacon said the lead police car travelled through the gate with no incident.

But Bacon said when the Minister's car got halfway through the gate, it went up lifting the car up.

Minister Scharping was sitting in the back seat with Brigadier General Peter Goeble, the German Defense Attache to Washington.

Both men were injured, Minister Scharping suffered an abrasion on his forehead and a cut on his right foot.

He was immediately bought into Secretary Cohen's dining room, where he was met by a flight surgeon and a medical team.

"He was pale when he arrived, a little bit of blood on his forehead. Was quickly cleaned up, colour returned. He asked for a glass of water, he spoke to his family by cell phone to report to them what had happened. His spirits seemed good, he was very lucid. Talked to his staff and the doctor after bandaging his forehead and his foot determined that he should go to Arlington Hospital for further tests, he did go there, he is there now. Secretary Cohen went with him."

Two years ago there was a similar incident at the same Pentagon gate involving the Japanese defense minister's car.
