Spoil islands are human-made islands that resulted from dredging the central channel in the lagoon. These islands have become an integral habitat throughout the lagoon, often surrounded by seagrass beds and mangrove fringes which provide habitat for a variety of organisms important to the ecology and economy of the region. Spoil islands are threatened by overuse and misuse, pollution, sea level rise, invasive species and erosion.

The vital signs wheel is the heart of Indian River Lagoon's Comprehensive Conservation & Management Plan (CCMP). It contains the 32 Action Plans that were developed to guide improvements to lagoon health.
