Adobe After Effects CC 2024: How To Create Faux Paper Crumple Using Puppet Position Pin Tool

This tutorial will show you how to use the Puppet Position Pin Tool in Adobe After Effects CC 2024 to create a ‘faux’ stop-motion paper crumple animation.

Effects Used:
Hand-drawn effect (on logo)
Transform Effect…Add Camera Shake to Rotation (wiggle 3,1)
CC Vignette…darken edges (wiggle 12,5) to add flicker
Noise
Roughen Edges

Keyboard Shortcuts Used:
Cmd/Ctrl + P: Puppet Position Pin Tool:
Cmd/Ctrl + Right Arrow: Move CTI 5 Frames Forward
U: Reveal Keyframes
P: Position PropertyS: Scale
R: Rotation
F9: Easy Ease
Cmd/Ctrl + D: Duplicate

How To Create ‘Faux’ Paper Crumple Using Puppet Tool Adobe After Effects CC 2024:
1. Create Composition (1080 x 1920)
2. Add Paper Texture Background
3. Add Logo (or any graphic)
4. Add ‘Hand-drawn Effect on Logo to add movement
5. Select Paper + Logo and right-click and select ‘Precompose)
6. Enter a name for Precomp and click ‘OK’
7. Go to Toolbar and click on Puppet Tool (Cmd/Ctrl + P)
8. Drag CTI to the beginning of Timeline
9. Click to add pins all over paper texture + logo Precomp
10. Move CTI forward 5 Frames (Cmd/Ctrl + Right Arrow)
11. Click and pull pins in toward center to simulate crumpling paper by hand
12. Move CTI forward 5 Frames (Cmd/Ctrl + Right Arrow) and finish
13. Tap Spacebar to Preview
14. Drag CTI between last 2 sets of keyframe
15. Tap P for Position, Shift + S for Scale, Shift + R for Rotation
16. Click stopwatch to add keyframes for all 3 properties
17. Move CTI forward and change Position, Scale, Rotation to animate
18. Adjust Keyframes to control timing & speed

How To Reverse Animation
1. Duplicate PreComp (Cmd/Ctrl + D)
2. Right-Click on duplicate and select Time…Time Reverse Layer
3. Tap U to Reveal All Keyframes
4. Select All Keyframes and drag closer to PreComp #1
5. Adjust Keyframes to control timing & speed

Finishing Touches
