The highway north to St. Anthony has mostly smooth sections punctuated by pot holed sections near populated towns. I guess it’s NFLDs speed bumps – cheaper than making real ones! The piles of firewood are owned by individuals or groups of homeowners. While they are on what we would consider public right of ways, the province must allow its use. Considering the necessity of firewood for heating during the frigid winters, theft must be severely punished similar to horse theft in the wild, wild west.

We were advised that late-June was outside of iceberg season, so don’t be disappointed. Just the same, we were excited to see one about 20 to 30 miles out from St. Anthony’s Fishing Point. It looked like a cruise ship. The Lighthouse Restaurant and the Great Viking Feast Dinner were both located at the Point. The Dinner is booked at the Restaurant. Meeting a St. Anthony resident on the Cartreau Point Trail, we received a lesson in Newfoundlandeze. One of which was practice on pronouncing the city’s name correctly. It took several tries to get it right: SnAt-Ny. In the next video about Saint Lunaire-Griquet, you will have to listen carefully to Donovan Thorne at the Nymph Café.

Until 1960, we all thought Chris Columbus was the first to discover the Americas. Then that chance encounter with fisherman George Decker changed history. Older folks will remember the shattering news while Gen Xers didn’t have that historically enlightening opportunity. Visitors need to take the guided tours, they are excellent.
