Zairean President Mobutu and rebel leader Laurent Kabila met face-to-face for the first time on Sunday (4/5) but only agreed to hold another meeting. President Mobutu Sese Seko did not, as expected, announce his resignation.
UN envoy Mohamed Sahnoun told a press conference that South African President Nelson Mandela would reconvene another meeting between Mobutu and Kabila within six to 10 days.
Mobutu and Kabila met for 90 minutes on board the South African navy ship Outeniqua, docked in the Congolese port of Pointe-Noire, in the presence of South African President Nelson Mandela.
