Can you imagine a city so clean and so well fed that it put all other cities around the world to shame, even to this day? Ancient Mexico City known as Tenochtitlan was the largest city in the pre-Columbian Americas at its peak with a population of 400,000 people. It was the best fed and cleanest city ever known throughout history. The city was built on an island in what was then Lake Texcoco in the Valley of Mexico. The city was the capital of the expanding Aztec Empire in the 15th century until it was captured by the Tlaxcaltec and the Spanish in 1521. Meanwhile during the 1500s multiple famines plagued Spain due to drought.

In 1519, The Aztec Capital City of Tenochtitlan stood as a shining example of urban sophistication. European cities were plagued by filth, overcrowding, and disease. Cities like London, Paris, and Seville were notorious for their narrow, unpaved streets choked with garbage, human waste, and animal carcasses. Open sewers ran through many streets, contaminating water sources and spreading diseases like dysentery and the plague. Bathing was rare, as many Europeans believed it opened the pores to disease, and personal hygiene was often neglected.
