We are each a collection of genes, relationships, cultural inheritance, learned fears and myths and including a set of cherished beliefs we regard as so unassailably true that we would die and kill for them. Nature, on the other hand, has a set of absolute rules which tolerate no disagreement, no violation. A reckoning for transgression may be swift or extend over millennia, even eons. But it is inevitable. Given who we denizens of global civilization imagine ourselves to be, and given Nature, which impartially and inexorably does what it does, can we learn to follow the rules in time? Do we even know what the rules are? Adam will take another look at the story of how we hunter-gatherers landed in this 21st century as the apex predator (after microbes, of course), and some ideas on how we just might make it to century #22.
*"So Human An Animal" was published in 1968 by famed microbiologist René Dubos. In it, he issued dire warnings of the future that is today.
