I was lucky enough to get to become friends with Rachel Pollack, who we sadly lost in 2023.
In 2015 I was lucky enough to do a Doom Patrol interview with Rachel for Sequart, someone who showed me that I could live a life even stranger than my favorite comic book characters. You really could go to where they are...

For a long time I processed the sheer impact of how much someone I barely knew affected my own life.
There are certain things that get so emotional to me that I have to be careful with them. Sailor Moon ..the CARRY ON Moment....and Doom Patrol and Rachel's run is one of those. I read it all each year during Christmas. I couldn't even watch the series finale for Doom Patrol around the time of Rachel's passing. It would have been too much, because I saw where it was headed. It's not like this with ..... everything... I can watch all kinds of movies with characters dying, and be unaffected. Doom Patrol and Sailor Moon...well, those are my friends. Those are real people to me.Those stories actually became a part of my life. I wanted to go where they are...and I could once I was given a map.

Of course there is no scientific way to measure the Speed of Pain, no magical number of years, and it never truly "leaves"...whether in a fantasy realm or real life...and Doom Patrol...the characters wait for you there, until you flip the page. They wait until you rejoin the story.

For decades, people hated this run of Doom Patrol. I mean like visceral hate. The attitude was Rachel had no clue how to write and Ted McKeever could not draw. It was an even bigger step into the bizarre for a series Grant Morrison had made plenty weird, but most people thought it was now a step too far somehow. To me, it's the closest thing I have ever read that actually feels like a dream on paper. Sadly, it was only near the very end that people began to recognize her version of Doom Patrol

Thankfully, I feel Rachel at least got to feel the turn around coming..It was close...real close.. maybe just in the last 2 years of life. but I really believe near the end, she knew. Even when I interviewed her, I am not sure she knew yet. But slowly...Invites for chats on podcasts, DC putting out the deluxe edition with her run which had never been collected before....All this after nearly 3 decades of people insisting she had to be the worst comic writer of all time. I really hope I was able to be a small part of that turn around just by getting to tell her what it all meant to me

A Celebration of Rachel Pollack was released on June 6 of 2024 by DC Comics. It reprints the debut of the Coagula, from Doom Patrol #70, And in a final, original short story starring Coagula written by Joe Corallo, Rachel’s longtime friend and collaborator, and drawn by Rye Hickman
Also the book reprints the truly and wonderfully surreal BROTHER POWER THE GEEK one-shot from 1993. I am not here to sell you something. I just want you to know the incredible person Rachel was...and she created things you aren't going to experience anywhere else. I guarantee that you have never read a comic book like BROTHER POWER THE GEEK... that one is even weirder than Doom Patrol!

USES
PWEI-DANCE OF THE MAD BASTARDS...Why? Because when I think of Rachel as 100% unbridled creative that few beside Rachel could ever reach. This was creating new worlds within the world we do not always enjoy living in. This is high-octane, kinetic creation...to the point that it feels dangerous.. because it is

For me the years 1993-1993 hold as a time of mad Creativity, influences smashing against each other like a pinball game. New worlds were now open, as people like Rachel showed me they could be. Saw The Boredoms from Japan live and then reading Doom Patrol from the same time...and really, it all begins there for me. Still echoes in my life to this day, never went away, nor would I want it to.
