The Inughuit (aka Polar Eskimos) were isolated until 1818 when contacted by Europeans. They were unaware of other humans, including other Inuits. Their isolation led to the loss of technologies like boats and bows and arrows. The 1818 European expedition that made first contact with the isolated Inughuit was led by British explorer John Ross. Until that moment, the Inughuit genuinely believed they were the only people in existence. Their prolonged isolation led to the loss of key technologies like building kayaks and umiaks (skin boats) or crafting bows and arrows. However, this did not mean they were without practical skills; they maintained a sophisticated toolkit created from natural materials such as bone, stone, and sinew for hunting and survival. The arrival of Ross's crew introduced iron tools, firearms, and sewing needles, which began a rapid and irreversible transformation of their material culture and way of life.
