STORYLINE:
In their only scheduled debate ahead of the Peruvian presidential elections on June 4, candidates Alan Garcia and Ollanta Humala exchanged markedly different views over the country's political future.
The much-awaited debate started with a 20 minutes delay as Union for Peru's (PPU) candidate Ollanta Humala arrived late, something that former president Alan Garcia pointedly mentioned in his opening remarks.
" This debate has finally started after a few incidents. It should have started at eight o'clock this evening, but for causes not of our fault as we were here on time out of respect for the country, the debate starts with a twenty minutes delay", Garcia said.
Before answering, Humala, who appeared tense and nervous throughout the debate, placed a Peruvian flag on his table and refused to remove it even after the journalist acting as debate moderator requested it.
Finally the journalist had to remove the flag personally.
"I want a country without authoritarianism and abuses, based on respect towards tolerance and critics", said Garcia clearly referring to Humala's background as a former military chief.
The debate revolved around five main issues: democracy, economic policy, the social agenda, decentralisations and citizens' security.
But after passing quickly over the debate points, both candidates started to take digs at each other's past.
" Part of my government plan is to give back the working class its acquisition powers and its working rights," he said.
