A beautiful unique hand made ceramic layered bowl inspired by the sea swirling around a rock pool and crashing against the rocks.
Decorated in turquoise, blue/green and brown glazes all hand painted overlapping to give more colour and texture. This layered bowl would look great on your dining table, why not try it as alternative to flowers for a table centre for that special meal or place it on a sideboard as a statement art ceramic piece.

The artist Sarah Burton designed and made this original bowl in her pottery studio in Nottingham UK. Taking inspiration from the sea and the British coastline she made this bowl from rolled out slabs of clay and coils made over a number of days. The stoneware clay is decorated with texture and shapes cut through the surface so you can see through to other parts of the bowl. Once dried and fired, three glazes are hand painted and then the bowl is fired again. Sarah uses an electric kiln and fires the stoneware pieces to 1250 degrees centigrade, each firing taking between 8 and 13 hours and 24 hours to cool down. Sarah enjoys the slow process of hand building ceramics which allow her to see how these contemporary shapes evolve through the process.

Sarah – ‘I love the diversity of design when working with clay, it’s so versatile and constantly amazes me as to how a lump of clay transforms into a beautiful piece of art. I like experimenting with different clays and glazes challenging myself to create new ranges of work. I never lose the excitement of opening the kiln after waiting 24 hours for the ‘magic’ to happen and see the results!
I started working with clay in the late 70’s and subsequently studied at Burton-on-Trent Art School. At the age of twelve I was too small to reach the wheel so had to stand on a box! I spent all my spare time in the pottery studio learning all the traditional techniques of working with clay that I continue to use today. After studying for an Arts and Crafts ‘A’ Level and HND in Business Studies I bought my first kick wheel and kiln and started working in my own studio, experimenting with ideas and improving my skills.’
