Описание к видео USA: US AUTO MANUFACTURERS SUPPORT SANCTIONS AGAINST JAPAN

(22 May 1995) English/Nat

US auto makers went to Washington on Monday to show support for sanctions against Japanese luxury import cars announced by the Clinton Administration.

Officials of America's big-three auto makers say they only want the same opportunities to sell in Japan that the Japanese have to sell in the U-S.

Japanese auto makers are also in Washington this week to lobby lawmakers against the sanctions.

They say U-S auto makers will gain nothing by forcing American dealers of Japanese cars out of business.

America's three major auto makers - Chrysler, Ford and General Motors - joined forces on Monday against their Japanese rivals.

SOUNDBITE:
Japan should open its market, the Japanese government has a responsibility to practice free trade at home rather than just demand it from other markets around the world.
SUPER CAPTION: Andrew Card, American Automobile Manufacturers Association.

Despite harsh words from Washington and manufacturers, Japanese luxury cars are very popular with Americans.

SOUNDBITE:
We'd like to sell cars in Japan. The consumers will pick winners and unfortunately they will also pick losers but we want a chance to compete. This is not a problem of us being able to meet consumer expectation. We know how to do that very well in markets all around the world.
SUPERCAPTION: Andrew Card.

SOUNDBITE:
The call is to Japan to open its markets and we can put numbers and we can put numbers on where we see greater access going. It going to go to our U-S workers and our workers in Canada and everywhere in the world that experiences free trade.
SUPER CAPTION: Jason Vines, Chrysler Corporation.

Some of the two-thousand dealers of Japanese cars are in Washington to make the case against sanctions - which they say will force them out of business.

Dealers say the foreign auto market supports over a half million jobs in America. Thousands of those jobs could be lost if the U-S moves ahead with tariffs against the 5 billion dollar Japanese luxury auto market

Japanese auto makers say what U-S companies really want out of sanctions is a bigger piece of the of their home market.

SOUNDBITE:
Every segment of the market is important and I think if the big three could lessen competition with luxury cars then the market would be less price sensitive and as a consequence they'll be able to increase prices and significantly increase their level of profitability.
SUPER CAPTION: Robert Gieszl, President-Toyota Motors USA.

SOUNDBITE:
I tell you simply they have to in a position to support where they have to support the administration on this and I think the administration is currying their favour, but overall I think its serves nobody long term and the big three they do not need the help. They made 14 billion(B) dollars last year as an industry.
SUPER CAPTION: Robert Thomas, President-Nissan Motors USA.

Both meetings in Washington come as U-S trade representative Mikey Kantor prepares to meets Japanese negotiators at the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development in Paris.
