Body Heat-Powered Device Works Even After 2,000 Stretches and Piercings

Researchers at the University of Washington have developed a flexible, wearable device that converts body heat into electricity — and it continues working even after being pierced and stretched 2,000 times.

Led by Professor Mohammad Malakooti, this breakthrough technology powers small electronics, like LEDs and sensors, using thermoelectric semiconductors. The device has three layers: heat-converting semiconductors, 3D-printed composite materials, and liquid metal traces that provide flexibility, conductivity, and even self-healing.

Unlike traditional thermoelectric devices, which are rigid and fragile, this one is soft, stretchable, and comfortable to wear. It lights up an LED the moment it touches the skin, without needing a battery or external power source.

Beyond wearables, the device can also harvest waste heat from electronics — such as computers and data centers — to power sensors, making it a sustainable solution for energy efficiency. It even has the potential to heat or cool surfaces, paving the way for immersive virtual reality experiences or climate-adaptive clothing.

This innovation, published in Advanced Materials, marks a major step toward battery-free, self-powered electronics that are smart, durable, and environmentally friendly. The future of wearables is here — and it runs on your body heat.
