In this video essay/documentary, we explore how Lana Del Rey completely reinvented the modern celebrity and how albums like “Born to Die” and “The Sad Girl Archetype” had a significant impact on pop culture.

From the Tumblr era to today’s aesthetic-driven internet culture, Lana Del Rey became more than just a singer but a cultural symbol. Through romanticism, melancholy, Americana, and themes of freedom, she helped shape an entire online identity movement often referred to as “Lana core”, “Lizzy Grant core”, or the “old money aesthetic”.

Using postmodern theory, simulacra, and internet culture analysis, I will examine how Lana Del Rey and those like her (like Sky Ferreira, Lorde, and Halsey) transcended music and evolved into a simulated, aestheticized form of celebrity, one that exists as both a real person and an abstract digital concept. In this Lana Del Rey analysis, we will also touch on Tumblr aestheticization, “sad girl theory”, and how online fandoms shape the modern celebrity.
