Princess Diana, one of the most beloved figures of the 20th century, was born into British nobility. But behind her grace and humanitarian spirit stood a complex family history—starting with her mother, Frances Shand Kydd.
Born Frances Ruth Roche in 1936 at Park House on the Sandringham Estate, she came from a prestigious lineage deeply rooted in the British aristocracy. Her father, Maurice Roche, 4th Baron Fermoy, was a close friend and equerry to King George VI.
In 1954, Frances married John Spencer, Viscount Althorp, and together they had five children—Diana being the fourth. Their marriage, however, faced challenges. Following a turbulent relationship and extramarital affairs, the couple divorced in 1969. The custody battle that followed was bitter; Frances lost custody of her children to John Spencer, a rare outcome at the time.
Frances’s relationship with Diana was often strained. Friends noted moments of emotional distance, especially after the divorce. However, following Princess Diana’s tragic death in 1997, Frances found a new sense of purpose. She dedicated the remainder of her life to Catholic charities and mourning in quiet dignity until her own death in 2004.
Despite the ups and downs, Frances’s legacy lives on through her grandchildren—Prince William and Prince Harry. In the 2017 documentary Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy, Harry shared, “She was our mum. She still is our mum. She smothered us with love, that’s for sure. I can still feel the hugs she used to give us. I miss that feeling.”
Frances Shand Kydd’s life was marked by privilege, heartbreak, resilience, and quiet strength—a reflection of the woman who raised the People’s Princess.
