How to Draw Portraits Quickly with Mass Drawing

In this lesson, Stephen Bauman shows a technique called mass drawing, a quick way to create a portrait by focusing on large value shapes instead of lines. He starts with rough shadow shapes and uses measurements and triangulation for accuracy. Think of your pencil like a paintbrush, focusing on where values meet. This method needs good contrast in your source image and works best with soft graphite pencils. With practice, mass drawing can speed up your block-in process and improve your portrait skills.
