In India, the Green Revolution occurred around the 1960s with the help of the great geneticist, Dr MS Swaminathan. He was born and raised in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu. He wanted to take up medicine initially but the famine in Bengal in the 1940s altered his choice into agriculture. This famine witnessed the death of more than 20 lakh people due to starvation. This was a man-made famine by the British policies of providing grains to the soldiers during World War 2. This made Dr. Swaminathan serve his country in some way and fight hunger.
