Distance from Earth: 1,500 light years

Swaddled in clouds of gas and dust, stars are born. In turn, the newborn stars pour energy into their surroundings, lighting up the clouds like colourful fireworks.

The Orion Nebula (Messier 42, M42 and NGC 1976) lies in the constellation Orion, in what we call the Sword of Orion.

It is an enormous cloud of gas and dust, one of many in our Milky Way galaxy. At some 30 to 40 light-years in diameter, this great big nebulous cocoon is giving birth to perhaps a thousand stars.

The Running Man / Ghost Nebula (NGC 1977 and Sh2-279) is a reflection nebula and bears a resemblance to a human figure running with its arms in motion, as though it’s a cosmic spectre floating through space. It is calmer and dimmer than the Orion Nebula, and only a few light years across.
