Master The Classics: Old Pal

Описание к видео Master The Classics: Old Pal

Harry McElhone is the bartender fist credited with publishing the Old Pal. Born in Scotland, Harry cut his teeth bartending at Ciro's bar in London in 1922 and then later at the New York Bar in Paris. Eventually he would take the bar over and rename it Harry’s New York Bar. McElhone published two famous cocktail books, the first was Harry’s ABC of Mixing Cocktails published in 1919 and Barflies and Cocktails published in 1927. Later in his career he did a stint at the Plaza Hotel in New York City. Harry's descendants run Harry's Bar to this day.

The Old Pal was named for Harry’s good friend or “Old Pal” journalist William “Sparrow” Robertson who was the Sports writer for the New York Herald and was a frequent enough guest in Harry’s bar to receive a mention in Harry’s ABC of Mixing Drinks. You wouldn’t be wrong if you thought of this drink as essentially a Boulevardier, another drink by McElhone. But it is much drier thanks to the Vermouth which fundamentally changed it's flavor profile and made it worthy of having it's own name altogether. Anyway I hope you enjoy thoroughly.
