There are 2 different types of twins - identical and non-identical. Identical twins are formed when an egg and sperm meet up, the egg is fertilized, and then it splits. And so you have 2 babies that are totally identical, they have the same exact genetic makeup, and they share the same placenta. Non-identical twins happen when a woman's body releases multiple eggs at the time of ovulation, and so 2 different eggs get fertilized by 2 different sperm, and for all intents and purposes, these babies have different genetic makeup. They're just born at the same time.

A lot of people want to know if the chance of having twins is increased by genetics - like, if someone in your family had twins, are you more likely to? And you are more likely to have twins if it runs on your mother's side of the family. It's passed along from woman to woman. They have a greater chance of having hyper ovulation, and this increases the chance for non-identical twins. But anyone can have identical twins. That's just kind-of a "freak-of-nature" thing that happens when the egg splits.
