Neighborhood Identities features photographic works of students from Las Fotos Project, a nonprofit photography mentoring program for teenage girls. The exhibition, Neighborhood Identities, represents a culmination of work created over a 12-week program facilitated by teaching artists, volunteer mentors, photographers, and community members, where participants learned how to use digital storytelling to convey their thoughts and feelings about their neighborhoods.

Las Fotos Project student photographers serve to represent a larger portion of an extremely important population within our city: girls and young women from communities of color. These youth are creative, ambitious, and powerful, and with supportive resources and allies, they can be active participants in making positive change in our communities.

Las Fotos Project is a brave space for teenage girls to collaborate, learn, and inspire. We use photography to foster critical thinking, build leadership skills, and create social change.

Las Fotos Project Programs:

1) Esta Soy Yo teaches visual communication skills as a tool for healthy self-expression. Project themes focus on self-identity and community.
2) Digital Promotoras use social media, photojournalism, and multimedia to raise awareness of health disparities facing their community and promote resources to address the issue.
3) Exposures is a cross-cultural online exchange program that establishes the arts as a common language among youth from diverse communities.
4) Limitless teaches girls to use photography, mindfulness, and self-care to improve mental wellness.

All programs are facilitated in 12-week semester terms and culminate with a community photo exhibition.
