San Carlos de Bariloche, often simply called Bariloche, is located in the Patagonia, region of Argentina.

Nestled at the foot of the Andes Mountains, it sits on the shores of Lake Nahuel Huapi, offering spectacular landscapes of mountains, forests, and lakes, that's why this region is called by some, a paradise on earth , in spanish "un paraíso terrestre"
Bariloche is approximately 1,680 km southwest of Buenos Aires. It is located in the province of Río Negro, at an altitude of 893 meters.

History

Bariloche was founded in 1902 by a group of European settlers, mainly Germans, Swiss, and Italians. The name "San Carlos" refers to Carlos Wiederhold, a German merchant who established a general store in the area, while "Bariloche" is derived from the Mapuche word "Vuriloche," meaning "people from the other side of the mountain." The city experienced rapid growth thanks to its tourism industry and the arrival of railroads in the 1930's.
