There is no question that a connection between the gut and the brain exists. Studies involving IBS, leaky gut, intestinal infection, and celiac disease all display symptoms of either depression, anxiety, brain fog or all three. Older patients can experience more severe symptoms like psychological distress while younger patients may experience hyperactivity and social dysfunction when faced with gut issues.

What can we do to resolve these symptoms? A common place to start is improving the diet. Depending on the issue you are dealing with, you may try a paleo diet or low FODMAP diet. Your practitioner can help you identify the best route. Next try pairing diet with exercise and stress lowering activities. Add probiotics to the mix. The addition of probiotics would most likely yield the most benefit. Try different categories of probiotics to see what works for you.
