Ex-EastEnders star Peter Dean told BBC to ‘get RID of the writers' after shock exit

EASTENDERS legend Pete Beale could have had a very different story as actor Peter Dean has hit out at the BBC soap for “axing” his character following a feud with late star Leslie Grantham in 1993.

EastEnders star Peter, 79, played Pete Beale on the BBC soap from its very first episode Poor Old Reg in 1985, before finally leaving Albert Square in 1993.

The character was married to Kathy Beale (Gillian Taylforth) which took a very sour turn when James Willmott-Brown (William Boyde) came to Walford.

Pete was initially jealous of the pair spending time together but when James raped his wife, Pete struggled to cope with the consequences.

Kathy became depressed and Pete turned to alcohol, all the while starting to believe his wife had actually had consensual sex with the evil abuser.

The couple eventually divorced and as the drama played itself out Pete managed to step up and protect his wife from James, forcing him to leave the Square, but their marriage was over for good.

Appearing on Loose Women today, the actor has now revealed he fought his exit from the hugely-popular drama.

"I liked working there but there was a lot of politics involved as there is in this industry,” he said.

When asked whether the producers’ decision to get rid of the character was because of his developing “feud” with Den Watts actor Leslie Grantham, Peter said there was a possibility.

“Could have been!” he noted. “We both come from opposite ends of the spectrum."

“What did they tell you about why they were writing you out?” Kaye Adams asked.

"Well it was funny,” Peter continued. “Producers called me in and said, ‘Writers can’t find anything for you to do.’

“So I said, ‘Get rid of the writers!’”

Despite his feelings about his exit, the Casualty actor insisted he would return to the soap in a heartbeat.

“Would you go back to EastEnders?” Kaye asked.

"Yeah I’m a jobbing actor, of course I would,” Peter replied.

The actor went also insisted he and Leslie had attempted to make up ahead of his death this year.

“We had a good relationship at first,” he shared. “I know where this is going! And then we fell out, and it got a bit naughty.”

Revealing how he and Leslie were going to start a new initiative against knife crime having been brought up in similar areas, he finished by begging viewers to “make up” with the person they are rowing with now.
