In a heartbreaking case, one-year-old Leiland James Corkill was brutally killed by his adoptive mother, Laura Castle, in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, England. Born to Laura Corkill, who had previously lost custody of her children, Leiland James was taken away by social services just 48 hours after his birth. Despite his biological mother's efforts to regain custody, the baby was placed with the Castle family for adoption when he was 8 months old.
Laura Castle struggled to cope with the demands of motherhood and failed to bond with Leiland-James. His crying triggered her anger, leading to a pattern of physical abuse. On January 6, 2021, Laura Castle violently shook Leiland-James and hit his head against a hard surface, causing severe brain trauma. Despite being rushed to the hospital, the little boy died the following day, just after his first birthday.
The court found Laura Castle guilty of manslaughter and child abuse, sentencing her to life in prison with a minimum of 18 years. The tragic case exposed flaws in the adoption system and raised questions about the vetting process for potential adoptive parents.
