Today's topic of discussion is Tonsillitis, a common problem among children, which is caused by an infection that affects the tonsil glands. Children suffering from Tonsillitis experience severe throat pain, fever, difficulty swallowing, and snoring. Recurrent infections are common, meaning the symptoms can resurface repeatedly. The typical treatment for Tonsillitis is antibiotic therapy, which usually resolves the symptoms. Acute Tonsillitis is the most common form, characterized by white studs or diffused white patches on the tonsil surface. A pediatrician or ENT surgeon usually treats it with antibiotics. However, if the condition persists, recurrent ENT consultations are necessary. The difference between acute and chronic Tonsillitis is based on the number of episodes. Chronic Tonsillitis is diagnosed when a child experiences seven or more episodes of symptoms like throat pain, fever, and antibiotic therapy per year, or five or more attacks for two consecutive years, or three or more attacks annually for three consecutive years. In such cases, Tonsillectomy, the surgical removal of tonsils, is a better option. This is how we differentiate the management of acute and chronic Tonsillitis.
