Toilet training usually takes place when a child shows some pre-toileting awareness skills.

This could be from age 2, however some research shows that starting later, such as 3 years, when a child is more able, reduces the overall time taken to acquire the skill of toilet training.

Tips:
Use visuals, keep a routine, observe when the child soils their nappy, observe when they show any signs of needed to go to the bathroom. Then transition them to the toilet and use a stool or potty chair to make sure that they are feeling stable and secure as you place them on.

Use the key word sign for 'toilet' and empty any soiled nappies into the toilet to let the child know that this is where poop goes. The child can sit on the toilet for a short period and it is not recommended to keep them on the toilet, especially as they have already soiled their nappy or pants. Continue with the routine of wiping, flushing the toilet, and washing hands.

The routine is going to be key to help a child learn what is happening and in what order.

Keep relaxed and don't leave a child on a toilet for extended times. If they have already soiled the nappy or wet the nappy, simply place them on the toilet, explain that wee wee and poo poo goes in the toilet, and take them off the toilet to go wash their hands.

Explain that undies/pants are to stay dry and to go to the toilet if they need to do wee week or poo poo to 'let you know' (again, a child who doesn't use words may let you know through their behaviour, gestures, or even looking at or moving to the toilet- so be alert and close by).

There are many different methods, so speak to your childcare or clinician about which is the best method for you and your child.

Clear signals are the best signals. So if you do throw away the nappies be sure not to re-introduce them during toilet training. Consistency is key.

And remember, if after some time you feel that it is not working, it's okay to go back to nappies and try again at a later time.
