Atorvastatin is a medication that is proscribed through out india for lovering hyperlipidimia or high cholesterol along with the prevention of heart attack or stroke. One thing about atorvastatin that not many people know is that the medication is given adjunct to a proper cholesterol restricted diet for it to work properly. Without a proper diet program the drug cannot work effectively and the patient may still be at risk.
These tablets are available from 5 to 80mg dose range, common brands seen in kerala are Atorva from Zydus, Aztor from Sun pharma, Atorlip from Cipla, Atchol, Liponorm, Stator, Tonact, Genxvast, etc.
The side effects of atorvastatin can be classified into common side effects and serious side effects. Common side effects include
Nasopharyngitis
Allergic responses
Pain in extremities
Muscle pain
Diarrhoea etc
Serious side effects include

Myopathy:myopathy is a disease of the muscle in which the muscle fibers do not function properly. This results in muscular weakness

Rhabdomylosis:A breakdown of muscle tissue that releases a damaging protein into the blood.
This muscle tissue breakdown results in the release of a protein (myoglobin) into the blood. Myoglobin can damage the kidneys.

Liver function abnormalities etc.

Even though these serious side effects are rare they are more seen in patients taking other medications with atorvastatin. Other drugs that have interaction with atorvastatin are.
Cyclosporine
Clarithromycin
Itraconazole
Digoxin etc.

Atorvastatin is contraindicated in some people.

People suffering from Hepatic impairment.

Pregnant women: during pregnancy cholesterol levels will be higher that normal, because cholesterol and cholesterol derivatives are essential for development of foetus. Taking atorvastatin during this period can have teratogenic effects.

Lactating mothers
