A colorful stubby-tailed bird, also known as “Navrang,” translated as “nine colors.” Colors are most striking when the bird is in flight. The colors of the pitta are emblematic of the kind of hues associated with India–deep yellow, flaming orange, turquoise, emerald green–bold, unapologetic colors.

Further evidence of its popularity is the sheer number of languages in which this bird is known — Gujarati (Hariyo), Bengali (Bornali), Malayalam (Kavi) and Punjabi (Nauranga). However, its Tamil name is particularly interesting. It’s called the ‘aru-mani kuruvi’ in Tamil, which translates to the “6-o-clock bird”. This refers to its curious habit of calling at 6 AM and 6 PM (The bird of course doesn’t always call at that exact time, this is an allusion to its crepuscular behaviour of being active during dawn and dusk).

The Indian pitta is a passerine bird native to the Indian subcontinent. It inhabits scrub jungle, deciduous and dense evergreen forest. It breeds in the forests of the Himalayas, hills of central and western India, and migrates to other parts of the peninsula in winter.
