Perhaps you’ve heard someone give a warning that a complicated situation would be “opening a can of worms”.

Or maybe something difficult that someone has been dealing with was referred to as a “can of worms”.

The situation that is regarded to as a “can of worms” can be small or big, light-hearted or serious.

It could be something as simple as letting a child eat dessert before dinner, or something as consequential as electing an unsuitable president for a country.

If you start a conversation with someone about ideology - and that person disagrees with you - you could say that you’ve “opened a can of worms”. Your conversation might take hours!

If you decide to start cleaning your house after not having cleaned it in years, you have “opened a can of worms”, due to the amount of work you’ll have to do.

An idiom with a fairly recent history, “open a can of worms”, is said to have come around in the USA in the 1950s and refers to actual cans of worms.

You see, fishermen (and fisherwomen) need bait to attract fish and worms are the bait of choice. They’re sold in plastic containers today, but were sold in tin cans in decades past.

Once a fisherman opened a can of worms, the live worms would start to wriggle out of the can, making it a task to keep them contained. It got worse if the can was accidentally tipped over!

If a friend is asking whether or not she should start on a project, you might say, “It sounds like a good idea, but be careful because you’ll be opening a can of worms.”

Maybe your dad is trying to fix the family car himself and your mom says to you, “Let’s go out, dad has just opened a can of worms. He’ll be busy with the car for the rest of the day!”

Perhaps you are being a little too helpful at work and a co-worker tells you, “Don’t open a can of worms! It’s best not to volunteer to do tasks that are not your job.”

So, whenever you foresee that dealing with a situation will be tricky, or that undertaking one thing will lead to many more things, don’t forget that it’ll be like “opening a can of worms”.
