Eared grebes are a little bit like whales in a sense. Researchers suggest that they use their large, fleshly tongue to crush prey against their palate so they can squeeze out the salty water.

The eared grebe migrates only at night. Because of of their length of stay at fall staging areas, its fall southward migration is the latest of any bird species in North America.

In the fall, pretty much the entire population of eared grebes flies to Mono lake in California or Great salt lake in the Utah. They do this to fatten up on brine shrimp and alkali flies they do this before migrating further south. Here they double their weight, and the size of their
muscles and organ change. The pectoral chest muscle shrinks to the point of flightlessness and the digestive organs grow significantly. Before they depart for the wintering ground
the process reverses . The digestive organs shrink back to about one fourth their peak size, the heart and pectoral muscles grow quickly to allow for flight.

Another cycle that the eared grebes have occurs 3 to 6 times each year for 9 to 10 months , each year the species is flightless. This is the longest flightless period of any bird in the world capable of flight at all.

On cold, sunny mornings.The eared grebe likes to sunbathe by facing away from the sun and raising its rump,exposing dark underlying skin to the light. This behavior may make the bird appear to have a distinctive high-stern profile.
