You Just May Be The One Cover

I had originally started working on a different “Remake of a Classic”, but with yesterday's sad news that Mike Nesmith has passed away I thought, instead, I'd pay tribute to him by doing my favorite Nesmith tune. After all, I grew up adoring The Monkees, and Mike in particular. Yep, I had the Monkees hand puppet, lunchbox, I'd beg my mom to buy the cereal with a Monkees record pressed onto the back of the box, I was up every Saturday morning to watch the show, and yes, I had all the albums.

As for this tune it was written by Nesmith and first appeared on the 1967 album, Headquarters. Nesmith is on lead and backing vocals; Glen Campbell, Al Casey, Mike Deasy, and Peter Tork are on guitars and bass; Hal Blaine played drums. It's short...barely two minutes long. In fact, out of the 14 songs on the Headquarters album, only one is longer than three minutes (Shades of Gray), and the entire album runs only 31 minutes, total. But what a punch is packed into those 31 minutes.

My version is pretty straight forward...just two guitars, bass, drums, vocals and a little percussion. I rolled out of bed at eight this morning and headed straight to the basement...I didn't even comb my hair (and you can tell!).

I've seen The Monkees in concert three times; unfortunately, Mike was never there. I also saw Mickey do a show on the inaugural of Royal Caribbean's Liberty of the Seas, and even hung out with him for a while in one of the ship's bars (he told very dirty jokes).

I know that over the years Mike struggled on and off about The Monkees. I was thrilled to see him finally embrace what most of us have felt all along, and that's the love we've always had for them, and always will.

I doff my green wool hat to him.
