This Ganesh Chaturthi, make perfect Ukadiche Modak 🙏 No cracks, no sticky dough, no fail – just soft & shiny prasad Modaks 🌸”
Ganesh Chaturthi is incomplete without Modak, Bappa’s favorite sweet 🌸.
In this video, I’m sharing an easy step-by-step Ukadiche Modak recipe – soft rice flour dumplings filled with a delicious coconut–jaggery mixture, flavored with cardamom and roasted poppy seeds (khus khus).

✨ What you’ll learn:

Make these authentic Maharashtrian Ukadiche Modaks easily at home for Ganesh Chaturthi 2025 and offer them as prasad to Lord Ganesha 💛.

Ingredients

For Filling (Saran):
▶️ 1 tsp ghee
▶️ 1 tbsp khus khus (poppy seeds), lightly roasted
▶️ 2 cups (200 g) grated fresh coconut
▶️ Jaggery:
130 g (¾ cup loosely packed) → Mild sweet
150 g (1 cup loosely packed) → Classic sweet
▶️ ½ tsp cardamom powder
▶️ 1 pinch nutmeg (optional)

For Dough (Ukad):
▶️ 1 cup (150 g) rice flour (fine or Modak flour)
▶️ 1 cup water (approx., depends on flour)
▶️ 1 tsp ghee
▶️ 1 pinch salt

📝 Method
Filling:
▶️ Heat ghee in a pan. Add khus khus, roast till color slightly changes.
▶️ Add coconut + jaggery together. Cook till jaggery melts and mixture thickens.
▶️ Add cardamom & nutmeg. Cool completely before stuffing.

Dough (Ukad):
▶️ Boil water with ghee + salt.
▶️ Lower flame, add rice flour, mix quickly, cover & steam 2–3 mins.
▶️ While warm, knead into soft, crack-free dough.

Shaping Modaks:
▶️ Grease Modak mould with ghee.
▶️ Press small portion of dough inside mould, fill with coconut mixture, seal with more dough.
▶️ Gently open mould → Modak is ready.

Steaming:
▶️ Place Modaks on greased steamer plate/muslin cloth.
▶️ Steam for 10–12 mins until glossy & soft.
▶️ Brush with ghee before offering as prasad.

📌 Extra Troubleshooting Tips (Not in Recipe Card)

🌸 Dough / Ukad
👉 Dough turns hard after kneading → Knead while it’s still warm, not cold. Cold rice flour stiffens quickly.
👉 Dough tastes raw → Cook rice flour properly in hot water for 2–3 mins before kneading.

🥥 Filling
👉 Stuffing falling apart / too dry → Add 1 tsp water or milk while cooking jaggery with coconut.
👉 Jaggery crystallizing (becoming hard) → Flame was too high. Always cook on low–medium heat.

🍲 Steaming
👉 Modaks sticking to steamer plate → Always use muslin cloth or banana/turmeric leaves for authentic flavor + no sticking.
👉 Wrinkled surface after steaming → Over-steaming or too much water in dough. Keep exact steaming time.
👉 Flat Modaks → Dough too soft or not sealed tightly. Seal edges properly before steaming.

✨ Storage / Serving
👉 Best served fresh. If making ahead, re-steam 2–3 mins before serving.
👉 Don’t refrigerate stuffed Modaks → they lose softness. Room temperature up to 10–12 hours is fine.

💡 Pro Notes

1.For aroma, add ½ tsp ghee in filling at the end → gives “temple prasad” taste.
2.If using store-bought rice flour, always sift it before cooking (removes lumps).
3.For variation: add finely chopped cashews & almonds to filling along with coconut.
4.Use banana leaves in steamer for authentic Maharashtrian touch + light earthy aroma.
