Tasmania's rise to mineral wealth seems to be well documented.. But what about the untold stories, the places yet to be written in history books? Those storys that have been lost, forgotten, unsung..

For instance, consider William Slater and his quest to find the source of crystaline reef gold on the pieman river, which he had discovered several years before Charles Sprent, The Merediths or Donnelly had every set foot in the area.

Slater returned after the gold rush broke out to follow up his old discovery and in tracing the gold up stream found 5 kg specimens containing gold throughout..
Newspaper articles describe he drove a 120ft tunnel though the cap of a hill, which was known by all at the time as Mt. William..

And slaters weatherboard dwelling, a luxury home for these parts. It was located in the heart of a place named Echo Vale, described by the reporter as a beautiful spot, to which no word painting could do justice”?

These names do not exist on any maps, and Slater has only been mentioned once , vaguely, by any historian, Peter Macfie in his masterpiece ‘History of Corinna and the Pieman River.’

There’s so much more of this story to be told, and I’ve been able to follow it closely by reading the newspapers from 1880..

So im on a mission to explore these lost locations, and see if we can’t find them out there in the wild, and put these missing pieces of tasmanias history, back on the of the Wild West coast.
