Zambia has inaugurated its first urea manufacturing plant and an adjoining 85-megawatt thermal power facility, marking a major milestone in the nation’s agricultural and industrial development. Developed by United Capital Fertilizer (UCF) at a total investment of US$641 million, the Chilanga-based complex aims to drastically reduce Zambia’s dependence on imported fertilizers and strengthen food security.

Commissioned by President Hakainde Hichilema, the project is expected to significantly boost crop yields — potentially increasing maize productivity from under 2 tonnes to 10 tonnes per hectare — without expanding farmland. The integrated power plant will ensure reliable energy for operations while supplying surplus electricity to the national grid.

UCF has also secured a US$1.4 billion financing deal with Chinese partners for phase two of the project, which will double urea production capacity to 1.6 million tonnes per year, positioning Zambia as a major fertilizer producer in Southern Africa. This expansion is expected to stabilize fertilizer prices, reduce import dependency, and support the country’s broader agricultural transformation goals.
