Cluster Interchange years for the XJ are as follows:

84 - 86 Electric except for Speedo
87 - 90 (Same as 84 - 86 but uses different speedo cable clip)
91 - 96 All Electric
97 - 01 All Electric, New design

Are you sick of looking at lights that don't really give you any helpful information? Then I think it's time you upgrade your instrument cluster to something a bit more accurate. Call up your local junkyards, check the web, rob your friends, do whatever it takes to find a better cluster so you can install it. You have to check the year you get because they change it from time to time. Obviously an 99 cluster won't work in an 87.

Installation is simple. Unscrew the dash cover and cluster. You may have to disconnect your speedo cable from the transfer case if you can't unclip it from behind. Then unclip the wire harness with your fingers or a small flat head. Now you are ready for the new cluster.

Chances are you have to change the odometer if you care about it. Unscrew the plastic cover and the speedo unit. Be careful of the plastic cover, it is delicate and may snap in half if you put too much pressure on it (Ask me how I know.) Take out the c-clip on the odometer wheel then move the wheels to the right to disengage them. It's tricky and you have to do them one at a time. Once done make sure they all mesh and put the c-clip back in. Now your cluster is ready to go. Do the reverse of removal.

If you had the base model cluster then you need new sensors to get correct informations. Your temperature switch on the top rear driver side of the engine will need to be upgraded to a temperature sender. Your oil pressure switch on the lower middle passenger side will need to be upgrade to an oil pressure sender as well. Once those are in place, all your gauges should function properly. Don't forget your speedo cable.
