When I worked in journalism, I covered the case of Princess Doe, who was murdered in 1982. Her body was found in the Cedar Ridge Cemetery in Blairstown New Jersey on July 15, 1982 and her identity was unknown until the 40th anniversary of that day, July 15, 2022. It was on that day that authorities announced she had been identified, thanks to DNA technology. We now know Princess Doe is Dawn Rita Olanick, who was just shy of her 18th birthday when she was found dead in that cemetery (she was born August 5, 1964).
Though I wrote several stories about this case over my career, I never had the opportunity to visit her grave. Her case always moved me and still does, especially having had the opportunity to read archive articles for my research in my publication's library, including the story written when her body was first found.
She was buried in Cedar Ridge after no one came to claim her body within the first six months, Blairstown residents paying for the final expenses and her headstone, where she is identified as Princess Doe. Staff photographers were often sent for photos and when there were memorial events, I did not get to go because it happens to be my daughter's birthday. Now that we know who Princess Doe is, I have an appropriate time of year to pay my respects to her. My daughter and I visited Dawn in August 2022 with Jeanette Iurato, who is with the Blairstown Museum and very versed on the Princess Doe case. We are so grateful that Jeanette showed us where her final resting place is and walked us through how she was found on July 15, 1982.
