Senior CPI(M) leader and Apple Farmers Federation representative Abdul Rashid Pandit from Shopian has opposed the proposed Kakapora railway project, alleging that it poses a serious threat to the district’s horticulture sector.

Pandit claimed that lakhs of apple trees are being felled for the project, directly endangering the livelihood of thousands of apple growers. He said that apple cultivation forms the backbone of Shopian’s economy and cannot be sacrificed in the name of development.

He urged the government to intervene immediately to safeguard apple orchards and protect the rights of farmers. Warning of serious consequences, Pandit said ignoring these concerns could lead to unrest and further problems in the district.
