Near Madinah’s Prophet’s Mosque lies the decades-old Al-Tabakha Market, home to over 60 popular restaurants that offer a wide range of traditional Saudi dishes. From early morning until midnight, visitors flock to this popular spot for a bite to eat.

Popular restaurants
Many dishes are on offer at the market, whose name translates as “Chef’s Market”. Visitors can enjoy Rass Al-Mandi, kebabs, liver, muqalqal and mutabbaq, among others. Other popular dishes include Kamounia, Makadim, Harissa, Kabli, Bukhari and Biryani. 

Seafood lovers are also catered for, with Sayadiyah and other grilled and fried fish options available. Most of these restaurants are family-run and have been passed down from generation to generation.

Development and restoration
The Madinah Development Authority has completed the market’s redevelopment that aims to improve its design and reflect the city’s heritage better. The restoration covered the alleys and meal preparation facilities and introduced more services in order to firmly position the location as a tourist destination for many visitors and residents of Madinah.

Meeting point
Throughout its history, Al-Tabakha Market was a prime meeting point for the elderly, especially after Friday prayers and during Ramadan. These special visitors grew up eating at the various restaurants, enjoying the simple ambiance that reflects the local heritage.
