Germany is not only one of the most powerful economies in the EU, it is also known for the quality of its education. Germany has 16 states, each of which has slightly different systems. Every child from the age of 3 has the right, but not the obligation, to attend kindergarten, which is partially subsidised by the state.

When children are 6 years old, they start school, which is compulsory for 9 or 10 years, depending on the state. The government pays for this fully, even for children who are not German. After 4 or 6 years in elementary school, children are divided into different schools depending on their ability. Hauptschule is for students with weak academic performance, who study until 9th grade and can then attend vocational school. Realschule is for students who are academically stronger, who finish grade 10, then continue to technology college or vocational training. Gymnasium is for advanced students, who complete grade 12 or 13 and can then go to university. College students do not have to pay for tuition – only their textbooks and living expenses – and international students can also study for free or at very low cost.
