This is an Emerald Swift or Spiny Green Lizard, Sceloporus malachiticus. I saw this one on a tree eating ants so went and got the camera. It is amazing watching just how fast they can use the tongue to snatch up an ant. I think these are about the most attractive reptiles in Costa Rica with the cool scales and beautiful blue and green colors. Emerald swifts are also Ovoviviparity which means their eggs hatch inside the mother just before they are born alive but the eggs have no attachment to the mother like a umbilical cord in humans. Just amazing! These were considered to be a subspecies of the Mexican emerald spiny lizard (Sceloporus formosus) but more research has made it into full species status.
