1) The word “Yo-yo” is a Filipino (Ilocano) word meaning to “to return”.
In 1928, Pedro Flores, a Filipino immigrant to the United States opened the first Yo-yo company in California manufacturing the centuries old toy. Shortly after, Donald Duncan bought the Company from Flores. The name “Yo-yo” was registered in 1932 by Sam Dubiner in Vancouver, Canada.

2) The Philippines has the longest Christmas season in the world!
The Christmas Season in the Philippines begins in September with the playing of carols and ends in January with the Feast of the Three Kings. There are 9 public night masses leading up to Christmas Eve!

3) The Philippine Eagle is the national bird of the Philippines.
The Philippine (or monkey-eating) eagle is the largest of all eagles. It has a height of up to 3.3 feet (1 meter) in height and a wing span around 7 feet (2 meters).
There are around 200-500 left in the world, so anyone caught killing one gets a 12 year jail sentence.
Despite its name, it does not primarily feed on monkeys but also on squirrels, birds, and bats.

4) Around 25% of overseas nurses worldwide are from the Philippines!
The Philippines is the largest supplier of nurses in the world!
The reasons for this might be:
a) Filipinos know English!
b) Nursing is a highly viewed profession in the country.
c) Filipinos are family oriented people who take care of the elderly.

5) The Philippine flag is displayed upside down during war time!
A unique feature of the Philippine flag is its usage to indicate a state of war if displayed red side up (or upside down). The last time this was done was during World War 2 against the Japanese!

6) Philippines is the 6th largest English-speaking nation in the world!
Philippines’ official languages are Filipino (based on the Tagalog dialect) and English. It is the sixth largest English-speaking nation after the India, U.S, Nigeria, Pakistan, and China!

7) Antibiotic erythromycin was invented by a Filipino Dr. Abelardo Aguilar!
The antibiotic erythromycin was invented by Filipino Dr. Abelardo Aguilar in 1949 for the Eli Lilly Pharmaceutical company in the US. This antibiotic is used for people who are very allergic to penicillin and has saved millions of lives!

8) More than 20% of Filipino words are Spanish words!
There are around 4000 Spanish words (20 to 30%) in Filipino (Tagalog). The words however do not sound exactly the same and sometimes are spelled differently.

baso/vaso/glass
tsismis/chismes/gossip

9) English word “boonies” or “boondocks” is actually based on Filipino!
The English term “boondocks” is derived from the Filipino (Tagalog) word “bundok” which means mountain. This term was brought back by US soldiers in the 1940s during World War II.

10) Jeepneys are based off of World War 2 Era American Jeeps!
Jeepneys, the most popular mode of public transportation in the Philippines, are based off of the Austin 7 (American Jeep precursor), which arrived at the start of World War II. The Jeepney was then modified to seat 8-10 people.
