Alex de Minaur was born on February 17, 1999, in Sydney, Australia, to a multicultural family that would come to define his identity both on and off the tennis court. His father, Anibal de Minaur, is Uruguayan, and his mother, Esther, is Spanish. The family spent part of Alex's childhood in Alicante, Spain, which led him to become fluent in both Spanish and English and deeply connected to both cultures.
De Minaur began playing tennis at the tender age of three, encouraged by his tennis-loving parents. His talent was evident early on, and by age 5, he had already taken part in his first competitive matches. When Alex was 13, the family moved back to Spain so he could access better tennis training opportunities. He honed his skills at the academy of Rafael Nadal’s former coach, Adolfo Gutierrez, and later trained at the Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre when in Australia.
