Dive into the fascinating story of Annie Maunder, the Ulster Scots astronomer who revolutionized our understanding of the sun! From her early life in Northern Ireland to her pioneering work at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, Annie Maunder's journey is a tale of resilience, innovation, and passion. In this video, we explore her groundbreaking discoveries, her innovative methods, and the challenges she faced as a woman in the male-dominated field of science. Don't miss this inspiring story! 🌟

Annie Maunder's early life in Strabane, Northern Ireland, and her journey to study mathematics at the prestigious Girton College, Cambridge University.
Her career as a 'lady computer' at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, where she worked alongside her future husband, Walter Maunder, to study solar activity.

The groundbreaking discoveries she made with Walter, such as the 'butterfly diagram' of sunspots and their observations of the 1898 solar eclipse.
Annie's innovative methods, including the use of photographic plates and spectroscopy in solar astronomy.

The challenges she faced as a woman in science, including discrimination, prejudice, and being forced to resign from her position at the Royal Observatory after her marriage.
Her later life, during which she gained recognition for her work, became a member of the Royal Astronomical Society and a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, and continued to advocate for women in science.

🌌 If you're interested in astronomy, solar physics, or the inspiring stories of pioneering women in science, this video is for you! Join us as we celebrate the remarkable achievements of Annie Maunder, the Ulster Scots innovator who illuminated the sky and forever changed the way we understand our own star, the Sun. ✨

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annie_S... - Annie Scott Dill Maunder (née Russell) FRAS (14 April 1868 – 15 September 1947) was an Irish-British astronomer, who recorded the first evidence of the movement of sunspot emergence from the poles toward the equator over the sun's 11-year cycle. She was one of the leading astronomers of her time, but because of her gender, her contribution was often underplayed at the time. In 1916 she was elected to the Royal Astronomical Society, 21 years after being refused membership because of her gender
