Stone carved polished stone owl Pick up a lump of rockery and carve it!

I carved this Owl from a lump of Purbeck rockery stone. I used Flex power tools to grind out the shape and polish the stone and finished off the detailed carving with my rotary Dremel type Ferrex tool and diamond burrs.
I was amazed at how much I enjoyed carving this particular stone, Purbeck stone is very tough stone and full of fossil shell making it very hard going. However the wonderful polished finish made up for all!
I am not sure that this is a good stone for beginners to start carving but if you have a Dremel or Parkside rotary tool it might be well worth the effort of trying a small piece.
Picking up a small natural rock boulder and buying a rotary tool, perhaps the very cheap Parkside cordless, might be the cheapest way to try out this rewarding craft. Incidentally the Ferrex Mini Bench Grinder is almost as cheap and has a bit more power.
