Super Mario Bros. 3 (6): World 6 - Ice Land / Iced Land

"The Ice Land Cometh"

Oh, ice, an element that's hardly ever nice to see in platformers. In Mario 3, this threat is tripled by the fact that we can still slip on the stuff, enemies can chuck blocks of it at us, and even more things are encased in it because of how freaking cold it is here. As you'd expect from a late-game world that uses this theme, this wonderland is anything but wondrous.

World 6 also stands out for being the only place with three forts, a puzzling underground maze, and for having what I believe is the hardest White Mushroom House goal to earn in the game. It's just amazing how difficult this world can be in so many ways, and yet it ends with one of the easiest airships and Koopalings of them all. Go figure, gang.
