European starlings bird box cam live day 23 2024/5/17

Welcome to our live nest cam of an European starling house in Montreal Canada! This is the 1st nest made in this birdhouse. It’s the Spring 2024 breeding season. The starlings started building the nest on 25th April, and the female bird laid her first egg on 1st May.

6th May - Incubation started
15th May - 1st and 2nd egg hatched
16th May - 3rd and 4th egg hatched

All the European Starlings in North America descended from 100 birds set loose in New York's Central Park in the early 1890s.
Starlings are great vocal mimics: individuals can learn the calls of up to 20 different species.
4-6 eggs, rarely 7 were laid. Greenish white to bluish white, unmarked. Incubation is by both parents (female does more), about 12 days. Starlings sometimes lay eggs in each other's nests.
Both parents feed nestlings. Young leave nest about 21 days after hatching. 2 broods per year.
