Is Islam, or any religion for that matter, compatible with democracy? This is the question that E A Jabbar, noted critic of religion, dwelt on in his speech held in Kannur, Kerala on 12th Sep 2015 to commemorate Avijit Roy, secular blogger, killed by Islamist extremists in Bangladesh. It is a very thought-provoking speech. Citing history, religious dogma and practices, he said that no religion serves democracy, secularism and freedom. Secular Constitution of India, he said, is by all ethical standards a far greater text than all holy books put together.
