A University of Tennessee professor has gone viral after dramatically “canceling class” when news broke of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s engagement only to reveal it was all a carefully staged PR lesson.
The viral clip shows advertising and PR professor Matthew Pittman announcing, “Taylor and Travis just got engaged. Due to this information, I can’t focus, you all can’t focus. Class is canceled, get outta here.”
Students erupted with excitement, some rushing for the exits while others tossed books in the air and cheered. Social media users quickly crowned him the “coolest professor ever,” with one joking, “He deserves a wedding invite.”
But in a follow-up video, Pittman revealed the stunt was part of his curriculum. The staged cancellation was designed to demonstrate how public relations and social media magnify major cultural moments.
“This is pretty big news,” Pittman said, explaining that Swift’s Instagram announcement which racked up more than *30.5 million likes in just 24 hours* offered the perfect real-world example. He even predicted it could have become the most-shared post in social media history.
Though the engagement didn’t quite reach that milestone, Pittman pointed out the timing: just ahead of the NFL season, when “Swift fatigue” among football fans might otherwise have peaked.
